I was really frustrated with this book. It was dreadfully dry through most of it being that it was set in a limited time period and setting and even characters! It was all talk and no action. The descriptions, though well laid out, were sometimes tedious. I nearly gave up on this book but FINALLY the last two chapaters all was revealed and everything finally made sense. Though, I feel like there are still some things missing in the happy ending that were not fully developed like the love affair of the to young characters at the end. It was rather left field and in a very odd time. SPOILER::::: ------ I would have suspected a different revenge of the Maule's than Holgrave giving up his personality traits to be with Phoebe and finally mix the families together! And I thought it was all about the land of the House of the Seven Gables, not mixing the blood lines... so them leaving the house doesn't make much sense either. I would say, not Hawthorne's best.

1984 is a book of warning. It is the future world we could have if we don't see the world around us now. It may seem like fiction but one day it can be reality. It didn't happen in 1984.... but maybe 2084. Similar books to this is Anthem by Ayn Rand and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. These books also show a futuristic lifestyles gone wrong by past events (pretty much our present time). Very good ideas to keep in mind so that we do not regress!
