Like Anthony Beevor, the style is both detailed and personal. Totally gripping.

Not as gripping as the Poisonwood Bible - more predictable. Still as insightful into what makes people tick or not tick and with a view of American culture which sits perfectly with the personal.

This is a dark dark fairytale of a book. The characters are unpredictable and wildly interesting. You can re read it.

Some people say its slow. I think the pace reflects the setting of the book and creates an atmospheric read.

I thought this was a cleverly written plot. It was the kind of love story I like. Lots of integrity, and human imperfection, and intense feeling. No hearts and flowers. Complicated dedicated love.
