Great idea that became seriously bogged down with overt melodrama toward the last 100 pages. I mean when you have a wedding and a funeral (proceeded by a tragic death) you risk the made-for-TV Lifetime feel of the prose. Unfortunately, Udall seemed to dive right in, which made me extremely happy be finished with the thing.

Has Irving ever been good writer (I remember liking 158 Pound Marriage) or is this just a thirty-year conspiracy by Random House to mask crap as serious literature. The novel, which is about a writer no less, and filled with Irving's trite tidbits on the craft, is not even first semester workshop quality it is so raggedly written. Populated with flat, under developed characters, didactic wanderings, confused ramblings of "telling way to much and showing nothing," and a wobbly plot, the book is merely a pure testament to a person that is able to sit down and tank though 500-typed pages (on an old IBM to keep it truly "literary"). Even when Updike was bad his writing carried the day. This guy just stinks. However, the spine of the story is worthy, unfortunately Gordon Lish isn't around to flesh it out for Irving.

Maybe they should not completely misconstrue a scientist in order to fit what they want to say. Some crazy stuff going on at the UC - hopefully, these guys are equipped with the intellectual heft to back up their "findings," because they will need it for the bevy of criticism that is going to come down on them. And to take more punches at the easily attacked Al Gore – come on.

Great story, but heavy handed and over dramatic writing brings it down a notch.
