Tyler posted a review at 2009-03-06 01:57:13 for 1984 Nineteen Eighty-Four.
(Language: English)
This was not the easiest book to get through for me, especially compared to Animal Farm which is the only other Orwell Novel I have read. However, I did quite enjoy it. I will not try to sum it up (if you don't already have an idea of what it is about you could find a much better description than I could give), but I will say it is definitely a must read. The second half especially was quite intriguing, more like a gruesome train wreck at some parts where the only thing keeping me reading was the sheer fact that it had to get better or to see where it would finally end. I agree that there are some parallels to today’s society especially looking back at the Bush Regime and those who not only supported it, but also asserted its legitimacy and integrity (If I didn’t know any better I would think the newspeak words were created just for such people). I only hope that our society can progress in a better direction and not be doomed to always follow the cyclical swapping out of one evil for another which this book discusses; or worse.I am actually going to, and am looking forward to, reading the appendix and the afterword!!! |

I found this a great book, read it in two nights. That's amazing for me, even with a book as easy to read as this one. It is so simply written yet subtly intricate. An astonishing reflection of corruption in governance that everyone should read at least once!

Tyler posted a review at 2008-11-03 04:53:59 for 2012 The Return of Quetzalcoatl.
(Language: English)
In 2012 you sort of retrace the author's "path of discovery." Pinchbeck ties crop circles and other omens together with personal experiences with hullucingenic drugs and 'prophetic dreams' etc. to come to his conclusion. Though often I felt he was doing not much other than justifying the use of the "shamanic drugs" and projecting his own thoughts on everything, it was quite an interesting read. The book does shed light on some of the scarry conditions of the world's injured environment and it does tell an interesting story for the most part, but especially if you are a skeptic you would probably not think the book to have any value other than that. I think that at least it gives one interpretation of what certain signs are pointing to and could possibly be used by others as a springboard to start their own metaphysical quest so to speak. I don't know, I wish I could give a better review. Maybe later, pretty tired right now.

(Language: English)
Been too long! I don't know what I would rate it. I liked that it mentioned Tahlequah, OK since my Grandmother lives there and I have been there many times myself. I don't remember much else anymore.

Tyler posted a review at 2008-04-15 10:49:09 for The Crusades: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions).
(Language: English)
This book contained all the excitement, intrigue and passion you would expect from a survey textbook on any given subject. Tyerman, obviously the academic, surely knows his topic though writing it in any manner easy to read completely escapes him. Not only was the text (and I use the word TEXT expressly) dry, but rather than help organise the information in a more digestible fashion the format leant to a randomness more akin to an excited child telling a story recounting aspects as they come to mind. The writing style was not easy to stomach in any aspect. Countless times I thought a sentence was building up to a point as it abruptly ended. Perhaps it is because the author is British and I am simply not accustomed to British writing, though I do not believe this to be the case. The book does have a lot of information about the Crusades if you care to muddle through it. However, I would not suggest reading this book if you absolutely do not have to.

(Language: English)
I know it is for kids, but this book was the first (and only come to think about it) that I could not put down. I read it in fourth grade while we were having reading time. All of a sudden I hear everyone yell at me at once. The Whole Class had been instructed to line up and I didn't notice anything! Apparantly the teacher thought it would be funny to have everyone yell my name.

Tyler posted a review at 2007-12-20 12:39:01 for The Diary of a Young Girl.
(Language: English)
Such a powerful account of what happened in Nazi Germany and an even more powerful testament of the enduring human spirit. Through the life of Anne Frank and the ones she is forced into hiding with the reader can really get a sense of what it could have been like to be Jewish or just different in a country enforcing hate!

It has been a long time since I've read this one too. I don't remember much and don't think I got all the way through, but I do remember enjoying reading it at times.

I don't know, I just like the story. Something about a spider who can spell...

For a kids book it is fun and pretty attention holding.

You just gotta read it or watch the movie at least once in your childhood.

I don't know what I would rate it, It's been a long time. Also, didn't actually get all the way through, maybe around half way (and I read it for my senior paper), perhaps that tells you something.

Tyler posted a review at 2007-12-05 03:40:41 for Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything.
(Language: English)
This was a great book! Very interesting and entertaining; especially for the inquisitive and those, like me, who like to find the truth rather than relying on common wisdom, etc. This book though is not a search for the truth per se, as the authors say themselves it has no unifying theme. What it does offer is an exploration of various interesting yet unrelated subjects showing hidden causes, correlations and other relationships. It does however encourage objective investigation and a way of thinking that is not the common practice. Even though Levitt uses possibly hard to understand economic tools in his analysis of the data, he and Dubner do such a great job of explaining things that you don’t have to be familiar with such to understand what they are talking about. Four stars because I found it so interesting and would suggest it to just about anyone, and not five stars because it was at times a bit wordy and overstated while at other times, though not nearly as often, perhaps a little under explained (the main point though still coming through). I truly don’t do it justice in this review, especially since it is now 4:00am. If you are thinking of reading it I would definitely recommend it.

Tyler posted a review at 2007-11-28 02:49:56 for Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates.
(Language: English)
This book is a very interesting reference on what pirates were really like! Beyond the action and adventure of Hollywood, David Cordingly compares and contrasts the popular view of the pirates and shows them for who they really were. From cruel to comedic tales the reader gets a true sense of what life was like for pirates, as well as merchantmen, privateers, members of the Royal Navy, colonists, etc. during the "golden age of piracy." A couple names I recognized, most I did not, but an interesting read nonetheless. Not the quickest read; a moderate amount of inadequately or non-explained technical and jargony language along with probably dated British slang made some parts even slower going and for me brought the book from a four to a three star rating. If you have ever been interested in pirates you should read this book, if not I doubt you would get through the first chapter or two.

Tyler posted a review at 2007-11-10 07:47:22 for Siddharta.
(Language: English)
I have tried to read this book about three times! Every time I get somewhere around half way through I don't pick it up again until it has been so long that I might as well start over. I was introduced to it through philosophy class and didn't even read it then. You may figure out that I'm not a big reader, but I'm trying to change that.

Tyler posted a review at 2007-11-10 07:44:46 for Inferno: the Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri (Bantam Classics).
(Language: English)
Got MAYBE a sixteenth of the way through before I got caught up in other things... I hope to actually read it someday. Perhaps I will use sparknotes to assist me since the language isn't all that easy to follow for me. :)
