I was recommended this book by two internet friends (who happen to be sisters) and I tolk them I would read it. I didn't regret it. As soon as I started the book, I knew I was going to finish it rather fast. The book keeps you amused and interested in what will be happening next while also managing to be mysterious and exciting as the lives of a seemingly ordinary girl and a coven of vampires intertwine. An unexpected scenario develops alongside the tale of love and sucks you even further into the book. I seriously had a hard time putting this book down. It should suffice to say that after finishing the book, I immediately ordered the other three parts to the Twilight cycle.

Fight Club is a hypnotic downward spiral into the broken mind of Tyler Durden. It is an apocalyptic vision of nihilism and selfdestruction that takes you into its might and doesn't let go until you manage to put the book down or go limp.
Reading it because I loved the film. So far, it's great!

It takes a while for this book to "get crackin'". The first part of the book is dedicated to flashbacks to the past of the main character - a tool to get into his psychology. It is clear some apocalypse has taken place, but the details are not revealed until the latter and ending parts of the book. I liked those parts better, but I guess they were indeed augmented by the protagonist's background - once you begin to appreciate his reactions. The book is rather low on science, but big on social and political consequences. All in all, it's a great book to read that is easy to get through over all. It isn't the apex of literary criticism of transhumanism, as I deducted from previous reviews; transhumanism is merely a theme woven into the story. That was a let-down. Still, it's an enjoyable book!

Beggars in Spain is a saga of biochemical posthumanism that emphasizes on the social effects that a group of superintelligent humans will have on the rest of the world. In the novel, the world is transformed and reshaped, not through war but through the maelstrom of legal and sociological reform needed to include this new breed into the crude environment of the genetically inferior. The book spans decades in time worth of this turmoil, and remains a great page-turned until the very end. A great read!

Waldheri posted a review at 2008-09-21 12:42:47 for Maelstrom. (Language: English)

It is the sequel to Starfish, but it is very different from it. Whereas Starfish plays in the depths and solitude of the ocean, Maelstrom is in the drybacks' domain. Lenie Clarke is a misanthropic protagonist who is bringing apocalypse with her in the form of an all-consuming nanobe. The mood of the story is one of desperation and hatred, which I liked very much, but it just doesn't get close to the suble nuances found in Starfish. Still, it is fun to see how the world reacts to its impending doom. I plan on reading the other two books (Behemoth: B-max

It has been described as a "tour de force" and I completely agree. Watts offers us a peak into the not-so-distant future and very-much-distant edge of the solar system, where outrageously interesting characters have been sent in search for intelligent life. Like the critically acclaimed Starfish, Blindsight projects a very dark and lonely atmosphere in which Watts uses the story to muse on psychology and the philosophy of the mind. Brilliant.

A very good encyclopedia on the history of philosophy. Although the emphasis is on western philosophy, the book also deals with eastern philosophy. It's a great book for reference, but unfortunately it's not very mobile because it's very thick. If you need a good Dutch book on philosophy, I recommend this one in favour of "De verbeelding van het Denken".

A combination of a hostile environment (the bottom of the ocean) and socially dysfunctional people; pedophiles, rapists and borderline psychotics crammed into a small station working on a scientific experiment - and being one at the same time as well. Exceptionally brilliant hard science-fiction by Peter Watts.
