I found the book to be a satisfying little read. Since I didn't read the short story, I can't appreciate exactly what the author may be doing in this short novel. It feels like a novel of manners, written formally, with many short chapters contrasting the life styles of the two main women characters, and giving a sense of both the time (at the beginning of WWI) and the very strict class structure of that period, but with some very modern themes, including unexpected non-marital pregnancy, lesbianism and the restrictions placed on everybody by "duty" and "honor" as those terms were understood.
