Please parents: stop confusing this with cutesy little children's stories! Though, I think it would not hurt a child to read the book, as children may as well learn that bad things happen to good animals and people, and to watch out for Hitleresque individuals, etc. It's really the movie that I think they could do without! Video City puts it in the Family Movies section, but, I don't think most parents want their 4 year olds experiencing the delights of a chopped off head in the refrigerator, even if it is just the head of a talking pig All that aside, this is a fantastic book, and yes, it does have it's funny, ironic moments; I don't care what anyone says!
