Fitzgerald artfully exposed corruption of American dream, constant pursuit of welth even at cost of ignoring human feelings and carelessness characteristic of American people.
Materialistic American dream related to wealth was opposed to ordinary human dream related to love. Even though the former virtually eliminated the latter in this book, it was proved that American dream was profoundly wrong.
Another thing that I liked: Fitzerald characterised the USA of 20s very well. It felt like I was living in the jazz epoch myself and could be a part of that time's culture ...
