I first read this 1000 page whopper when I was 12 and trapped vacationing with my dad and grandpa visiting logging towns on Vancouver Island. I loved it then and was drawn to the childhood half of the story. A the time I really didn't recognize the irony of my dad reconnecting with his roots while I used this book to space out. I read it a few more times over the years and recently tore threw it on a trip by train. What draws me in now is the adult story and the arc that is drawn from formative youth to alientated adult and back. Such a sweet book, still creeps me out too.
