Not his greatest, but his last novel. Very atmospheric in places, but dismal. Somehow, it doesn't quite convince. Sue is annoying, Jude obscure (in more ways than one). The message is about true feelings versus institutional relationships (marriage). The issues haven't really changed, we just wear different clothes.
