The House of the Spirits is a hefty book, not just because of its length but because it never gives the reader a breather: each page contains about 1.5 paragraphs of densely packed font and it's nearly impossible to come up for air. It took me three tries to get past the first twenty pages of this book, but once I did, I was hooked. If you give up trying to read it as a novel and instead read it as a story, the type of story a slightly drunk great-aunt would tell over the course of an entire night, it's a fantastic read. It's impossible not to compare it to One Hundred Years of Solitude, but aside from a similarity in genre and the spanning of generations, this book is entirely different.

Some characters are much more compelling than others, but the setting is lush and wholly developed and the author makes brilliant use of casual mentions that will dominate large chapters 200 pages later. It's impossible not to feel some pathos for even the most reprehensible characters, and although the book is not without its flaws, you'd be doing a disservice to give up on it before finishing at least 75 pages.
