I haven't read it all yet; nor have I read any other reviews. I want to say this, though: Leaves of Grass is beautiful and far more than just a load of allusions to one man's "exuberant spirit", though he certainly embodied this. The poet's life is testament to the power of his words, because it endorses his often made and seldom heeded assertions that the words were authoritative and not merely conjured by the imagination. Whitman was posthumously affiliated to the Transcendentalist movement of his contemporaries (apparently), but his stance wasn't one of philosophical Idealism as an arbitrary predilection (though it certainly was consonant with Idealism) - it was grounded in the transcendental itself. All the references to his homosexuality or eccentricity or brashness fail to embrace the ground upon which Leaves was constructed and, ultimately, don't even begin to do it justice.....
