I loved 'This book will save your life' so I was expecting great things from this. It is perhaps inevitable that I was disappointed. The characterisation is really weak, especially Paul, who bleats his way through the novel like a spoiled child; I had a permanent urge to slap him. All other characters are utterly one-dimensional, expect maybe Elaine - we occasionally get a very real sense of her desperation. The writing is beautiful, but this is a really disappointing novel, which doesn't so much end as just stop. Grim.
