Great parody of the gothic genre. Austen's character is obsessed with novels such as The Mysteries of Udolpho, and her longing to be involved in a gothic experience herself, leads to wonderfully anticlimactic scenes. The part where Catherine expects a note she finds to be a secret confession, only to find out in the light of day that it's actually a laundry list, is one example of the clever way Austen turns the genre on its head. Great fast read, not given nearly enough credit. If one reads the novels Austen is parodying, I think you'll appreciate it more.
