It takes a while for this book to "get crackin'". The first part of the book is dedicated to flashbacks to the past of the main character - a tool to get into his psychology. It is clear some apocalypse has taken place, but the details are not revealed until the latter and ending parts of the book. I liked those parts better, but I guess they were indeed augmented by the protagonist's background - once you begin to appreciate his reactions. The book is rather low on science, but big on social and political consequences. All in all, it's a great book to read that is easy to get through over all. It isn't the apex of literary criticism of transhumanism, as I deducted from previous reviews; transhumanism is merely a theme woven into the story. That was a let-down. Still, it's an enjoyable book!
