This is one of the classic fantasy series I missed as a kid. Figured I wanted to read the book before I see the film, and did like it a lot. It's a fast-paced exciting story, building strongly on the myths of the British Isles. However I didn't feel it has as many layers like say Philip Pullman, who is a good read regardless of age.
Don't get me wrong, The Dark is Rising is also a good read, but it's not a story that keeps you thinking about it for weeks and weeks after putting the book down. But, great entertainment for a day!
