Anne McCaffrey is a fantastic author, and I love the ideas and stories she has come up with. There are, however, two main faults. One is her outlook on her characters. Most of the villans are closed-minded fanatics or selfish dictator types, while most of the main heroes/heroines are these noble individuals seeking change who have a corny sense of humor and a rather embarrasing dramatic flair. In her books, I usually find the dragons and the secondary characters more fulfilling than the main ones. Her entire outlook on the humans of pern just seems unrealistically optimistic to me. In addition, there is never any real sense of danger throughout these books. The thread is supposed to be a terrible and horrifying threat, but it's taken care of far too easily, and far too quickly.
Don't get me wrong, the trilogy is on my must-read list for any science fiction and fantasy fan, but it's the world McCaffrey creates that makes the whole thing more than just another read, not the characters.
