This book is, quite simply, a classic. Steinbeck is one of the great American writers and I think this book is his best. The writing is utterly beautiful. You care about the characters. When I was at school, we read Of Mice and Men, which is usally the one people mention when Steinbeck comes up in conversation, as if Of Mice and Men was the only book he ever wrote. The Grapes of Wrath is an important book and Steinbeck is/was an important writer. It's tragic, uplifting, it's got it all. Sheer literary brilliance. It's not often you read a book that moves you tears, but this is one of them.
