***SPOILER ALERT***This novel is set in Afghanistan and the U.S. over the 1970-2002 time period. It chronicles the life of an Afghani-American man who has a couple of serious secrets in his past that change his live. It also gives some insight into Afghani’s life and how it evolved to where it was in September 2001. We also hear some of the challenges and experiences faced by Asian immigrants to North American face.
The main character is a boy born to privilege I Kabul. His best friend and he enjoy the annual kite flying competition. While the privileged boy is a great flyer the Hazurat boy is an excellent kite runner. As it turns out they are in fact half-brothers and both portray aspects of their father. The privileged boy betrays his friend with a lie and must live with his conscience for the rest of his life. The Hazurat suffers because he is left behind in Afghanistan and is eventually executed by the Taliban. The privileged boy is able to "become good again" by returning to Taliban ruled Afghanistan to rescue his now orphaned nephew.
I enjoyed this description of Afghanistan in the pre-civil war era, the Soviet invasion era and the Taliban era. Also there was an excellent villain the Afghan/German boy who loved Hitler and end up as a key person in the Taliban.
