This book is a good introduction to Tolkien. It reads like a cliff notes version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in that it leaves out most of the flowery description and focuses on the action. It tells the tale of the First Age of Tolkien's world, and by reading it, one can gain background understanding for reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy later on. It also contains Tolkien's first and best love story, that of Luthien and Beren.
