Sometimes the relentless religion became annoying. What I was thinking about as I read was how the portrayal of slavery here compared with the workers in 'Germinal'. There are passages of the book that put forward the argument that all workers in the capitalist system are slaves. The other thought that persisted was that I think Malcolm X was wrong when he talked about 'Uncle Tom' slaves. Tom was engaged in a struggle against slavery. That his struggle was for his God rather than for revolution doesn't lessen that fact that he refused to brutalise other slaves to make his own life easier.
