A typical Hardy ending with the wrong people loving the wrong characters. As always, very atmospheric.

Not one of Hardy's better novels but it does address some cutting edge issues for the period in which it was written. Set in a mid 19th century village in which the world has seemingly barely changed for centuries, the novel describes the effects of a doting father's efforts to raise his only daughter Grace above her station in life through education. The dilemma that this poses to father & daughter when it comes to choosing a marital partner is well-described - the life-long village beau Winterborne or the well connected doctor, Fitzpiers. Then issues of infidelity, divorce and the moral dilemmas posed by marriage and vows are central to the novel's development. Perhaps the main failing of this novel is that unlike in his better novels, Hardy doesn't quite capture his main characters in a sufficiently convincing manner to fully engage the reader.

extremely interesting book...i felt like it could be interpreted in so many ways and it presented human behavior in an even more realistic way than many of his later works that i've read.

Classic! I adore his writing and this is one of his most beautiful. I always read is books in the wintertime - a cup of tea and, for preference, rain outside whilst warm and quilty-cosy inside! <sigh>

This book is one of those Thomas Hardy novels that aggravates me. Mr. Hardy occassionally gives me the impression that his heroines are manipulative shrews. These women manage to feign innocence and dupe everyone, including the author himself. If she loved him so much as she claimed to near the end, she wouldn't have married whats-his-name or gone back to him after the love of her life died. Once again Mr. Hardy had an ending that was happy for the people who least deserved it, and the good and morally upright were the ones who perished in the storyline.
