An interesting critique of "the cool". Definitely worth a look, especially if you find people who are hip for the sake of being hip irritating.

As someone who grew up in the shadow of a counterculture or two, I found this book to be a pretty integrated critique of countercultural social practices and politics. The book traces the development of the modern counterculture to WW2 (debateable) and the western reaction to the hardline conformity of Nazi German culture at the time. The reaction, in Heath and Potter's opinion, resulted in a rejection of conformity in principle. That is, all social norms are simply there to control the individual. The book goes on to argue that this position is counter-progressive, in that this individualism-in-the-language-of-leftism basically resulted in a "Hobbesian race to the bottom" that substituted cool rebellion and the rejection of social norms for an effective progressive left. Long story short, the book is a good read with a lot of interesting ideas, and is actually pretty effective in a lot of its arguments. However, Heath/Potter undermine a number of their arguments with straw man (which you can spot pretty easily if you've read the material they critique), highly selective and imbalanced attacks on various countercultures, and some falty premises about the nature of countercultures themselves, especially vis-a-vis mainstream culture. And although I am a fan of Heath in particular, I can spot his writing pretty easily, and find him to be condescending, and find a number of his arguments to be emotional reaction and disillusionment disguised as reason and logic.

For every solid point, interesting argument, or thoughtful investigation there are multiple instances of ad hominem, straw man arguments, lazy generalizations, lack of evidence and oversimplified solutions (hilariously referred to as 'perfectly workable'). The central thesis may be intriguing and correct, but it's unfortunate this book was written as it was.

This book is a scathing critique of the counter culture movement epitomised by Ad Buster's Buy Nothing Day which tries to subvert the mainstream values of capitalism nby getting epople to opt out of the system for a day. The authors argue that whilst there is a tension in behaviour between people who represent counter-culture ideas and those who do not, there is in fact no tension in values.

The authors argue that there is no tension in values because the counter culture movement is inherently dependent on consumerist values to represent and give some identity to the movement. Whether this is in the form of selling Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan records, No Logo T shirts or fair trade coffee.

Hence the authors argue that the Left needs to jettison incoherent counter culture ideas and seek reform from within the system in order to bring about greater social justice.

Along the way they analysis films that represent counter culture ideas, like American Beuty, Fight Club,Matrix, etc

This book really renovated my thinking, chucked out a bunch of clutter for me. I love its pragmatic, clear-thinking and the ease with which it deconstructs leftist dogma.

in parts very agreeable and very cohesive, this book untimately made me angrier and angrier as i kept reading it. the premise that people who are idealistic and want a better future are futilely banging their heads against a brick wall i found to be condescending and insulting at times, and basing arguments around alanis morrisette songs and american beauty i found to be pretty flimsy. had some good points to make but in the end it was unfulfilling and ultimately left me feeling confused.

Awesome documentary about 'sticking it to the man.'Our whole culture and society is evolving, and this book describes how we'll always find ways to oppose and separate ourselves from mainstream society, thus there will always be a counterculture. It's a good read, and I'll most likely give it 5 stars when I'm done.
