Another bitter pill from Amy Tan, which, as all of hers do, turns to candy once you have worked hard enough to swallow. Her general themes are present: the dichotomies of immigrant life and the lives of first-generation Chinese-American women, the magical, storied, and hidden personal histories of parents discovered by their misunderstanding children, the difficulties and ultimate rewards in bi or multi-cultural relationships. As always, her prose is rich, detailed, and as well-written as any great contemporary author.

I have always loved this book. I discovered it in college and it opened the door to the rest of Amy Tan's amazing books. It is well written and very touching. Highly recommend this.

What a great book - elements of magic and typical mother daughter family drama Ms. Tan is known for.

Amy Tan is always an easy read for me. Makes everything flow and the way she portrays the Chinese culture is almost exotic and a little scary at times.

Tan continues to expand on her favorite theme: the mother/daughter relationship set against the backdrop of the rich and complex culture of China. The Bonesetter's Daughter brings new ideas to the sub-genre as Tan delves into the topic of sacrifice.
