Repellant central character and an unbelievable "love" story made this book missable for me.

Having really enjoyed his earlier stuff I was disappointed, he just rehashes similar concepts and there was nothing about the book that made you want to keep reading. I thought he was gonna have a plot twist towards the end but it continued to be hum-drum

I think every married man, especially with child, should read this book. Very vivid descriptions of Shanghai and the emotive reactions the city stirs up. Recently visited the city and I must admit that I am discomfitted by the city. Not entirely sure why though. Back to the book. It does make you think about very real issues. Practicality vs love. What is love, really? And yes, women are all strong. Especially for their children. Very good book - read it and go through the tumultous life of the protagonist.

Apart from one gaping plot hole I really enjoyed this book - read it in one sitting in fact. It's an interesting portrayal of fatherhood and what is means to be married.

Found this book entertaining to start, and then it got a bit boring with lead character's yo-yoing emotions.

Enjoyable light read while we were in Beijing, but all the characters are impossible to like or sympathise, including the 4 years old daughter...

"My Favourite Wife” holds up a mirror to life in Shanghai that a lot of ex-pats will find hard to look at, but it had me subway-station-missing-hooked throughout and says more about the city than any guide book."
A quotaition from the Shanghaiist

Tony Parsons does characters so well. On one hand you want to crucify them and then they remind you of yourself! Great characters and writing what characters are thinking. Enjoyed it!!

One of Tony Parsons's best. It turns very dark in the third part, but the ending is satisfying in every way possible.

Like all his other books it deals expertly & sensitively with the dilemas of modern family life : ageing parents; parenthood ; love ; friendship ; freedom ; responsibility : fidelity etc. Only this time set against a backdrop of the economic miracle in China. A place of previously unkown opportunity , fortune and freedom combined with grinding poverty and unimaginable injustice. Not a cheerful book but great.

This is a fun and very readable tale of expat life in Shanghai, many elements of which have identical counterparts in Moscow and Kyiv. It has some lovely vignettes, but is not helped by a horribly implausible ending which somehow engineers a triumph for bourgeois English decency over Chinese corruption and the utilitarian complicity of Anglo-Saxon financial firms. The book would have been better if the catharsis were left undiluted.

I really enjoyed this and almost stayed up all night to read it but managed to go to bed but then grabbed it first thing in the morning and continued reading till I finished it.

Would recommend it for anyone who's liked the previous books by him and anyone who's working in China or who has an interest in China and fiction generally.

It's definitely good plane reading but also good anyway although maybe not bedtime reading since it means you might end up not sleeping.
Highly readable and since I know both Shanghai and Hong Kong and know a bit of London, the places are very real to me. Thought it was a very good piece about how a married man who loves his wife and child can still love his mistress and the strength of the woman who is his wife comes through. Not sure I could have lived with what she went through.

Good description of Shanghai and China, some sensitive issues like corruption, poverty and exploitation are being discussed. All these are interwoven with the love affair between a married solicitor and a Chinese girl. The author feels warm towards his characters and keeps their 'human' souls through their overwhelming love. Billy goes through exhilaration and despair, through the deaths of his dad and best mate with the never ending support of his wife who is a very strong lady and puts her daughter and family in front of everything.

Enjoyable book especially if you have ever spent any time living in hong kong or China as an Expat. The book looks into both sides of life in an economic boom- the winners and loosers and the ruthless nature of big international law firms. The age old expat story of man falling in love with wildly different local girl is explored well, and the struggle of feeling rootless and torn between two countries and cultures is interesting. Struck a lot of chords with me but may not to others if you cannot relate to expat living.

Oh my God what a piece of shit. Cannot believe I finished it, although it did take me about 6 weeks to read 270 pages. Maybe it was a good description of Shanghai/Hong Kong/China (as other reviewers say here), but if I was looking for that I would have bought a travel guide. Have read all his novels to date (on the basis of Man and Boy being sooo good), but I think this is the last I'll bother buying. Sorry Tony!

Smooth writing. But I rather dislike the protagonist. Too self-centred on the whole. A story like any other.

the life of the expats are portrait exactly the way i have always imagined and not to mention the chinese nationals' materialism (the females' in particular) which can't be as practical as portrait in the book. personally i do not really like the part whereby bill and jinjin were so much in love with each other yet the title is called my favourite wife.

really gd read. nice pace. u can really feel the anguish of the protagonist who slowly fell for another woman while he loves his family still, how he fights it, gives in to his desires and finally gives it all up for his family.

It is again "Man" & "Wife" dilemma, I am pretty much sick of this stories in Tony Parson's books. I don't quite get it whether he is trying to lay out a modern times "relationships" or what...with cheap male characters who are selfish, self obsessed and stupid female ones who are either understanding wifes or victimised mistress or vice versa...

If I come across with another Parson's book, I should quickly turn my back and walk away...

A easy read which explores various shades of love, when an expat husband having an affair in modern shanghai. The book also tries (not very hard) to explore themes like pollution and corruption. It's ok, but not great- suitable for a lazy afternoon read.
