I am going to start by saying that I am a fan of Burroughs. I relly enjoyed his books Junkie, Queer, The Naked Lunch and Interzone. However my recent experiences with some of his other books have been a tad off putting. I will say that his style of storytelling is quite remarkable and, in the case of this book, innovative. The problem I have here is the same problem I had with Exterminator! and The Wild Boys. My statements here are not t be construed as homophobic but they need to be considered in the same light that i have towards Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged: IN Atlas Shrugged, Rand peppered that massive tome with several ten plus page speeches about the virtues of unbridled capitalism. such is the case with The Place of Dead Roads except in stead of speeches, Burroughs has packed his otherwise pleasant read with lots of hallucinogenic, cowboy butt sex. Enough to cause me to put this aside until a time I can push my way through it.

My favorite Burroughs's novel. His web of tall tales got more and more intricate as he aged.

Again, the trilogy is a long dream, it works on dream logic and it reads like you are in a dream.

Ultimately my favorite Burroughs volume. Unless I am allowed to count his final three books as one work, which I don't think would be too unreasonable, because they constitute his final "trilogy" of sorts. Given the nature of Burroughs' style, it's difficult to pin down any certain plot that can be easily described in a short review, but it can be said that it mainly follows the exploits of one Kim Carsons, likely a literary manifestation of Burroughs himself in one way or another, across the Wild West and the galaxy. It's presented (surprise) as a series of loosely-related vignettes and events as Kim and his cohorts attempt to create and maintain a society of "Johnsons," who are concerned primarily with pursuits in immortality and generally just telling the rest of the world to piss off. It's complete with various bits of drama, humor (dead pan and ironic as ever), and meditative monologues. I personally was able to relate in many ways to Kim, which certainly may have added to my liking of this book. Many would-be readers of this book, and most of Burroughs other works, will want to put it down after the first of many pedophilic and violent homosexual scenes, but those willing to accept those for what they are won't have too much trouble getting through it. Whether they appreciate the book, though, is something I am unable to predict. When it comes to the body of Burroughs' work, I personally believe it is an adventure well-worth taking, and this stop along the way across the Wounded Galaxies is perhaps the finest.
