This book includes Tolien\'s Essay On Fairy Stories, the most lucid and intriguing work of literary criticism I have read on fairy stories. This is where one encounters his theory of Eucatastrophe.

This book has three components: an essay, a short story, and a poem. All deal with the value of creativity and story. It is fascinating and magnifies wonder.

A little book (with an elegant gold & green cover in this edition) gathering an essay, a poem, a short story and a translation, an occasion to discover Tolkien in other domains than his well-know novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The essay 'On Fairy-Stories' is a very enlightning developement about Tolkien's conception of fiction, of his art as a storyteller and of his opinions and judgements about fairy stories. It also helps explain the relationship between his writing and his beliefs as a Christian (which is very interesting, whatever the reader's religious views may be).
The short story 'Leaf, by Niggle' is a little jewel (for Tolkien, despite the length of his most-known novel, was also very good at telling really *short* stories). It's the story of Niggle, a painter who's begun a huge work way beyond his own skills, and wonders how he'll finish it in time before his 'journey'. It may be read as kind of an allegory about art and lifetime, but it's much more than just a lengthy explanation about 'art's long, life's short'. It's sad, melancholic, but it's sweet and funny as well, Niggle keeping the same humor in all situations that may remind the reader of well-known hobbits...
The poem 'Mythopoeia' ('the Making of Myths') is a discussion between Philomythus ('The One who loves Myths') and Misomythus ('The One who hates myths'), in which Philomythus makes a brilliant apology of mythology and, more generally speaking, of the spirit of myths.
I don't speak about 'The Homecoming of Beorthnoth', which I have not read yet, but it's an example of Tolkien's work on Old English poetry.
