It starts of well and ends interestingly but at nearly 700 pages its rather tedious. The dialogue and writing is average but there are some interesting ideas and the league of virgins section is excellent. It just drags man. Sorry Clive, you're clearly very talented.

As with many stories, this one is about good and evil, More specically, what good and evil feel they must do to reach their own ends, and the outward ripple of events that their decision causes upon the world, It's a story about love, another predominant theme, and, like with good and evil, one that is utilized into a "Romeo and Juliet"-esqe situation between those on the side of good and those on the side of evil. It an old story, but in Barker's penmanship and style, one that you've never read before.

One of the best books I have ever read, but needs a open mind and good imagination. It is definitely in my top 5.

Barker has a fantastic imagination, but as with King (whose horror fiction I love better), Barker often veers into unintentional camp when he's trying to be frightening. Certain touches-- like his description of the Iad Uroboros as a veiled, unimaginable evil (as opposed to a described one) work, but many of the mythological elements just made me roll my eyes. The work of a good horror/fantasy writer, especially, is to suspend disbelief. This one just wasn't very convincing.

With his wonderful imagination, Clive Barker was just hitting his stride here. Part of the book was the basis for my first abandoned website "The Reef" (an idea way ahead of it's time apparently) this novel crosses the span between the mundane and the fantastical without a noticeable transition. Great stuff.

The first Clive Barker book i have read and I was impressed. Under Reality's mask there lurks a darker sinister world with such surreal characters and settings. Looking forward to the reat of the trilogy.
