It's been a tremendous good read with a very unexpected outcome - still a bit confused about the end. But well worth the read!

As could be expected from me, I much enjoyed this book, seeing as it is Clive Barker and all. It is a very interesting concept, the story enthralling, though I did find the ending leaving much to be read. The story is essentially well-developed, but seems the end drops off, as if Barker loses his passion after the climax.The story itself, however, is a very interesting statement about the fascinations of the human condition. Our main characters spend much of their time questioning themselves and the reason for their existence. Essentially, striving for the same goal, to understand life and to see God.Like many Barker books, there is a question of God's existence, but in my experience thus far, this is the first time the "antagonist" of his story has a firm faith in the existence of a Creator. This could be because the Creator himself is an actual living character. There are also strong homosexual themes, as also can be expected, though in this book, much more poignant. Great

Unfortunately this is not one of my favourite Clive Barker books. It read to me as though he'd had this wonderous, voluptuous vision of unearthly beauty and power but could not figure out a way to form a novel around it while maintaining a solid plotline. I came away with no better understanding of the nature of Jacob and Rosa at the end than I did when they were first introduced to me; and Will's bizarre lycanthropic imaginings of Lord Fox were completely befuddling. Barker should have simply painted a picture of what he was imagining, instead of trying to build a novel around it.

I read it, and did not enjoy it. Its narrative was a mish mash of ideas. I thought it would explore the natural world more than it did (as per blurb on back of novel) and have the main character elevating the influence of nature over human, but rather it concerntrated on the main characters (authors) sexuality, and what that meant for his place in the world. I don't give a hoot as to whether the main character is gay or straight, if I want to explore gay issues I will read The Gay Times. I want a decent supernatural story to be the focus, not his struggle in San-fran. Clive let me down this time.
