Everybody makes a big deal out of this book and I just don't get it. Its a book about a hateful recalcitrant little brat who while being punished creates a world he can still have fun in...and then at the end he's not punished at all because his mom brought him food after all...Huh? How is this one of the greats bastions of childhood literature? I do agree the illustrations are amazing though!

I've read this book probably close to a hundred times and every time it feels fresh and intriguing. It's pure genius how Sendak was able to come up with just a few sentences and some illustrations to portray a world so rich and a story so full of life and pathos.

No matter if you're a boy or a girl, chances are there was a little bit of Max in you as you were growing up. The need to rebel, to taste freedom, to control your environment, but still be loved and cared for and fed... Classic.

This is a book you can read 300 times and still enjoy. I've read it to third graders and college students alike. It's about a naughty child who is sent to bed without his supper. It's about an inquisitive boy who wants to explore the world, and can tame all the monsters and demons he finds on his way. It's about redemption. It's about dreaming and wishes. It's about a mother's love for her child. It's about the scary things in the night that have yellow eyes. It's about home and security and smelling good food. I think I'll stop here and go read it again.

I believe I had this book as a child but I couldn't remember what it was about. So I spent an afternoon around my favorite shopping area, the intersection at Lamar and 6th St. I could spend a week shopping for books at bookpeople, and then spend another week at waterloo records, and then spend a few days in Whole foods. So with all the hoopla surrounding the new movie I thought I should reread the book. It was terribly short and there wasn't much of a plot. Some kid wears a wolf costume and gets sent to bed without supper for being to wild. While in his room he imagines himself transported to a place where the wild things are. He parties with some monsters for awhile but then comes back to his bedroom where some hot food is waiting for him. Was it all just a dream? I would read this to my children, if i ever have any : )

After a night of raising havok, Max's mother called him WILD THING and Max said I'LL EAT YOU UP, so he was sent to bed without eating anything. The author then takes us on an imaginative adventure, following Max, to Where The Wild Things Are. Readers become acutely aware that this is much more than a picture book. Shortly after being crowned King of All Wild Things and having a rumpus you won't soon forget, Max sends his wild friends to bed without their supper. And then from far away across the world he smelled good things to eat and was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all. We are reminded that all children need that wild rumpus, but they also crave structure, stability and love. A gift worth sailing back over a year, in and out of weeks and back into the night of their very own room...where dinner is waiting for them...and it's still hot.

When he was little, Maurice Sendak was not good at sports or school but he loved to have his parents read to him. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, the story of Max, who gets sent to bed without his supper and has a scary dream where he has to use his imagination to escape, is just the sort of story Sendak would have loved to hear read to him. This story, with monsters more charming and goofy than terrifying, is an ideal way to get very young readers interested in reading on their own. My kids loved it. The book is being made into a movie starring Catherine Keener and the voices of Lauren Ambrose, James Gandolfini, Catherine O'Hara and Forest Whitaker. I don't know about you, but the thought of hearing the voice of Tony Soprano as a character in a children's movie does not fill my heart with joy.

All about our wildest, rawest emotions - a child's internal landscape. To explain it would be to spoil it. A perfect book.

When asked one of those silly game questions, as to if I could only take three books with me to a deserted island that I'd have to be on for the rest of my life, which ones would I take, I said the Holy Scriptures, the big black book that is all four of the Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy Books (before the fifth one came out) and Where The Wild Things Are

It's a nice book if taken quite literally, it's a lovely book if taken metaphorically, and it's bloody astounding and rather erotic if taken poetically.

So, you know, don't read your kids poetry on the same day as this book. Let them sort that out for themselves, later in life lol

A kids classic. The edition I have read is bilingual. It's written in English and in Greek. The English edition is well known, wonderful and deserved of all the praise it gets. I would like to highlight that the Greek translation perfectly encapsulates the aura of the original version. Thrilling to read in both languages. Applause must go to the uncredited Greek translator who matches Sendak's cadence and prose perfectly.

After reading this book I had to take another look at the title, the author did a great job describing the inner nature of the boy by using this title. Every creature in the text represents an attribute of the boy, even the words that he uses with his mother were used by the creatures; for instance, when he told his mother that he was going to eat her up, these are the exact words the creatures use as he departs the island. I also like the way the author gave the creatures human attributes, the hair and clothing causes the reader to focus on the odd looking creatures even more wondering why they have hair like people or modern clothing. It was intentional the author wants to show us what the inner person could look like. I like the emphasis placed on the size of the creatures. They are much large than the boy, yet he has all of the power. I believe that this represents choices we make. The situation can be much large than we are, but we have the power to overcome or defeat the situation if we choose. The colors that are used are natural earth tone colors that make the reader feel as if he/she is right there taking part in the adventure. This is a great story.
