very nice and inspiring story indeed ! a bit too childish and hurried some times, but still I enjoyed the read, and IT'S A CLASSIC !

I love the way the book (the movie doesn't) illustrates the already resident qualities of the friends. The self doubt of the tinman and his compatriots speaks so loudly to the self doubt of children and the rest of us. We already have it, and others may be able to see it, but we are blind to it. We expect too much of ourselves if we expect anything at all.

Its so different from the film, & at first I felt it was a little faded with the lack of Hollywood. But as I got in to it, & memories of the audiobook I had of it as a child came back to me, I really started to appreciate it in its own right...if anything I now think the film treated it cheaply. Its like a traditional fairy tale in many ways - in the way it is written, in the actions that happen, & in the underlying morals it puts across. It did feel a little long-winded at points, but at the same time it never felt stagnant. I'm inclined to look into the other Oz books, though more because I want to see the elements used in Return to Oz (one of my favourite childhood films) in their original context than I am to read more of Baum's work. But he's a fair enough writer, & he does have some wonderful ideas (I loved the "Dainty China Town" & the use of the green glasses to fool everyone, for example). I'm glad I've finally read this book.

I read this book because I wanted to test out the opinion that most people (including myself) have that the book is always better than the movie. This might possibly be one exception. Not that the book is bad. It's not a bad book - actually it's a pretty good one. It's just the movie is also good. They are a bit different from one another. The differences made in the movie are good ones and work well to make a very good story.
