Love, love LOVE this book! It only takes about two hours to read, so buy the next one while you're at it! Jessica is such a lovable character, Johnathan is such an easy character to relate too, Melissa is so mysterious, Dess such a sweet, and Rex is such a curious character you'll just keep reading and reading and reading! The darklings are thought-provoking, the secret hour a place you wish you could go and stay up until midnight seeing if you can! READ!!

slow starter, hard to connect with the charecters at first, but once you become involved, good story, I will read teh rest.Easy book to pick up and set down...

A good mythology the author has created. But there is so much to say, that the character's barely got developed. I'd say I have to keep reading...Good for Buffy and fantasy fans. But it really is a teen book. Great mythology!

So, this is the first spooky book I have read in a long time. It has paranormal elments all throughout the entire book - which I love. However, the monsters are probably not cute Jim Henderson puppets... which is why I was spooked out... But it did make me wonder, if I was a Midnighter, what talent would I have and how would my peers and those spooky monsters react to that talent?

it was a great story, that involves everyone's dreams of having a world to themselves and having the ability to find what their true and special unique talents are.

Pretty good start to the trilogy. Nice characters, interesting science, but gets a bit boring towards the end.

Someone asked me once, "If you could have any wish come true, what would it be?" and I said I wanted an extra 24 hours in the middle of the night that were known only to me. So after I shared that with my friend Katie she told me about this series, which is *awesome*. Basically, in the small town of Bixby, Oklahoma, those born exactly at midnight exist in a special secret hour each night that the rest of the world is not even aware of. And only they can fight the secret dangers in that hour that threaten the rest of the world...

This book is the second Scott Westerfeld book I've read and I've got to say, it definitely lived up to expectations. I was kind of surprised at the premise, but it quickly grew on me, as did the characters. What made this book different than the other YA books I've read recently was the fact that it's not in first person. I actually really liked it, though it was different enough that I noticed (like when I first read Peeps at it was in first person). Anyway, this book was fun to read. I wasn't sure how Westerfeld was going to end the book -- at least end it while making room for the rest in the series, but he did a great job. I can't wait to read the second (and third) books.

Typical young adult fantasy fare. A group of teenagers are the only ones that experience a 25th hour in the day in which they also have special powers. Such as jumping really high. There are also creatures that only come out during this time which they have to battle against. It's not bad reading, it's just not excellent reading either. If you're looking for some light, relax material, I recommend it. I will probably get around to reading the sequel one of these days.

I am amazed at how each book I read by Scott Westerfeld always surpasses my expectations. It left me in suspense for book #2 in this fantasy series.

Nice story. Maybe Scott Westerfeld does not have a unlimited talent, but it if you like Horror stories, this one is nice to read.

Though THE SECRET HOUR is a solid first novel for a trilogy, it lacks a sense of narrative depth that might otherwise make it compelling. Westerfeld fails to flesh out his characters in this volume, making it difficult to care what happens to them until very late in the story. He presents a good concept, but never moves far enough with the idea to make readers feel compelled to go on to the next book. This is serviceable young adult fantasy that could do better with a little more attention on the characters and a little less on attempting to convey how scary the resident monsters are supposed to be.
