What is it with British children's stories about kids who lose their parents and are forced to stay with mean relatives? After there was Oliver Twist but before there was Harry Potter, there was James Henry Trotter in JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, a bizarre and at times surreal story of an English boy whose parents are eaten by a wild rhinoceros escaped from the zoo, forcing James to move to the edge of England to live with Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge, two mean-spirited ladies who for no reason beat and yell at him constantly, keep him away from other children and force him to sleep on the floor in the attic.

Salvation comes in the form of a friendly wizard who gives James a magic packet, which James promptly spills on a nearby peach tree. The tree sprouts the biggest peach the world has ever seen and the story grows from there.

Dahl's story, which was first published in 1961, was one my younger sisters enjoyed more than I. But, like the giant peach, it grows on you with repeated readings and it became one of my kids' favorites. Made into a wondrous animated movie in 1996 directed by Tim Burton and featuring the voices of Richard Dreyfus, Susan Sarandon, Jane Lees, Pete Posthlewaite and a young Simon Callow, who has become quite a meany in his own right on AMERICAN IDOL.

I read this book to my daughters while driving to the beach...we laughed and giggled for 10 hours...even Dad enjoyed this one. This is a book enjoyed more if it is read out loud.
