This book is a sequel to Geography Club. Although I am a huge fan of that book, I was somewhat disappointed in this sequel. The character development is really good, as Russell and his friends grow and change in new directions away from school. But, it seemed to me that the author was trying too hard to convey the message about coping with differences and finding hidden beauty. I am not given to exploring the subtleties of metaphor in authors' writing, but Hartinger's writing really beat me over the head with the message. Nonetheless, I plan to read the next book about these characters, Split Screen.

This book is the sequel to Geography Club. Russel is out as a gay boy, but things got very uncomfortable in his hometown, So to get away from it all, he takes a job as a camp counselor. The first session of kids is a group of burn victims. Russel wades his way thru trying to gain and keep the trust of these special kids as well as trying to manage his growing attraction to a fellow coworker. All of this and some more is what makes Order of the Poison Oak a great read. Anyone who liked Geography club will definetly like this.
