I consider it almost a sin that I lived to the age of 21 and had never read this amazing little book. Just don't take it as a theological read on the afterlife. Rather, read it as an explorative work on the thought processes of people across the spectrum, from faithful believer, to self-righteous bishop, to distraught mother, to curious wanderer. It's a fantastic read, particularly chapters 5 and 11.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical at Lewis' attempt to depict heaven and hell through fiction as I first started reading this book. However, this book combines many perspectives about heaven and hell to articulate the relation between heaven and mankind, though not necessarily by the biblical images of heaven. If you are looking for doctrinal perspective, The Great Divorce lends great insight; if you are interested in what heaven is like, perhaps a breath of air but not a clear-eye view of it (go to the Bible and some serious commentaries or testimonies for that). Also, The Four Loves by Lewis is a fitting supplement to this book, as many themes explained in The Four Loves are illustrated here.

This is one of the best books I have read, EVER. It is a fanatastic perspective of heaven and hell, and regardless of your spiritual bent it is very interesting and enjoyable read.

Good book to read on the bus. Why? It is about a bus ride from hell to heaven. Not very long, or in possession of a strong plot. It is one of what Lewis calls his "suposeals". It is technically fiction but it is really about Theology. Still, for me, very interesting and entertaining in a way that makes you think.

Great book by Lewis. Since it's a fantasy, it definitely shows a little more of his creative side, yet it is still full of wisdom and gives insight into the possible relationship between Heaven and Hell and the people who inhabit it.
