I was very happy to see Mia mature so much in this book. I am thrilled that she and JP are now a couple, I haven't liked how her first boyfriend, Michael, had been treating her since the prom debacle several novels ago. I hope she and JP are able to stick it out.

Reviewed by Sally Kruger aka "Readingjunky" for TeensReadToo.com

Meg Cabot has done it again. PRINCESS MIA is Volume IX in THE PRINCESS DIARIES series. I've been hooked on Cabot's humor and the voice of Mia Thermopolis since Volume I, and this second-to-last in the series has me mourning the fact that it will soon be over.

With Michael breaking up with Mia, and Lilly giving her the silent treatment, Mia has hit an all-time low. She refuses to talk with anyone, go to school, or even get out of bed. But never fear - depression "Mia-style" is pretty entertaining. Days of wearing Hello, Kitty pajamas, watching reruns on TV, and destroying her vegetarian ways by binging on any available meat in the frig, will have readers grinning and chuckling aloud.

When friends and family members realize their efforts to get Mia back into the real world have failed, she is forcibly taken to her first-ever therapist appointment. Once she adjusts to the fact that her therapist's name is indeed Dr. Knutz, and that he has a penchant for dressing like a cowboy and telling horse stories, she recognizes that he might actually be able to help her survive her depression.

The usual cast of characters is still in place, with some expanded roles for characters like the "hot" J.P. and the previously irritating Lana. Grandmere provides her own wacky brand of humor, especially as she deals with Mia's depression and a sudden growth spurt that give Mia a much more "womanly" figure.

Plot twists offer readers romance, mental health issues, important social engagements, and challenging "princess" decisions. Mia manages to deal with everything in her always entertaining and quirky way. Fans old and new are sure to have a great time reading PRINCESS MIA.

Ugh. This book made me want to pull my hair out. Mia has a lot of problems. First, she has the audacity to break up with her boyfriend of two years (in previous book) because he was going to Japan to prove himself to Mia's father and because she wouldn't be his first. She is soo needy and overanalyzing. Mia worries too much about what everyone else thinks, that what she thinks is overshadowed by everyone elses' opinion. Soo, instead of fixing the relationship she broke apart, she goes to JP. Ugh. There isn't really anything wrong with him, but he is an easy catch, and (I don't think) anywhere near Michael in terms of amazing "boyfriend material". And then to Lily, who is even more emotionally needy and who finally snaps and turns on Mia, she is a completely useless character. She sucks Mia's attention and is a complete succubus. Look at Boris. She had him whipped, then breaks up with the safe and caring arms of her boyfriend, then turns to a bus boy (earlier in the series?) Ugh...D:

The best Princess Diaries yet! Mia really owns up to her past behavior, and if you thought the status quo was stuck (Lilly is her BFF; Lana is evil; JP could never compare to Michael) things get v. interesting here. CANNOT WAIT FOR THE FINALE!

You certainly shouldn't START with this book, seeing as it is volume 9 (actually, it's volume 16), but for those who enjoy the series, it is a delight to see the protagonist continue to grow up and have an evolving personality and relationships, rather than remain stagnant in every book. One of Cabot's desires was to have the characters and relationships evolve realistically and naturally, and I think she's accomplished that here (to the chagrin of some younger readers who can't imagine that their BFF won't always be a best friend forever). And, of course, Cabot never fails to find new ways to make me laugh (or smirk, as the case may be).If I had to state a negative, I'd admit that Cabot's writing gets repetitive after a while. She mostly does it for effect, and I can't say I don't know people who speak the same way, but it does get a little wearing if you're not used to it. This far into a series, however, some repetition is expected.Overall, a great read.
