These are my favorite books of all time. Delightfully forgettable (I'll explain later), these books whisk you off to a wonderful world and hook you in. Once you start reading, you can't stop. At the end, they leave you wanting to read them again and only improve the more you read them, little nuances driving you deeper into the story everytime. When I say delightfully forgettable, I mean of course that you find new surprises you'd forgotten or hadn't picked up on before, not that you'll forget about these beautifully written books

An Excellent Trilogy. I think Garth Nix could/should be the next big thing in YA literature. His novels about a world in which dead things can rise and a chosen Abhorsen, a teenage girl is the only one who can stop them is exciting, well written and captivating. These books are filled with atmosphere and mood and the characters are great. Seriously, an excellent read if you are into YA lit, or even if you are not. :)

This is quite possibly one of my favorite trilogies. I love way things play out, the world that Garth Nix created... it's a good read for teenagers and adults, though it tends to get a bit dark from time to time. Yet the characters are still very enchanting, and Garth Nix has a way with creating images with his words that makes it nearly impossible to put the books down... he is a great writer, and I look forward to more of his works.

So Far it is pretty awesome. I like the way Nix is able to bring you into a different world and explore a certain sort fo spirituality within tht world without ever giving you that feeling that you have to work really hard to understand all the trivial details of his fictional setting. Instead of describing his setting, its true nature reveals itself in the progression of characters...which is stellar and definitely an asset to the series

I bought these just for the heck of it...and they were packed up in a box shortly after and left there for a year. I found them recently and started reading. I was thrown off at first and thought whoa the Author has just messed it all up but then my mind was taken for a whirlwind adventure that was unbelievably fun and captivating and so out of the ordinary. It amazes me what people can come up with!

I love these because they're totally engaging from the first line, usually my benchmark. Hook from the beginning and I'm there! Young adult fiction doesn't have to be compromising and can deal with harsh truths. Let's face it, if half of the youth are knifing each other, this is nothing!

I had seen these books on the shelf of my local library for some time but didn't pick them up until earlier this year because I felt they would be like all of the other fantasy novels I had read: filled with dragons and witches and extremely boring. It was not so. These books are probably the most original fantasy I have ever read, apart from Tolkien and Rowling. The ideas Nix presents are very interesting, and something I've never encountered before in literature. The story is entwining, and the characters believable. I liked Sabriel the best, and Abhorsen got a little jam packed at the end, making it my least favorite. Lirael was okay, but took a while to get going. Also, I had hard sympathizing with Lirael when she was complaining continously, she was really annoying until she finally got out of the Clayr's Glacier. Otherwise, this series is well worth reading especially if you want some new and exciting fantasy.

I really liked the originality of the settings; it is refreshing to see non-Tolkinised fantasy novels.

So Garth Nix is really good at something that almost no one else is: crafting realistic female characters who are strong and interesting and flawed WITHOUT sacrificing the quality or integrity of the male characters. Well, except for Sam. But Sam's problems are less related to the fact that he's a boy and more related to the fact that he's a self-absorbed brat who gets himself in trouble beyond his ability to mitigate it and then proceeds to bitch and moan about it all the damn time. (And no, the whole Wallmaker thing didn't win any points with me. It really just served to remind me that he's really just a magical Q and really should be back at the lab, presumably shutting the fuck up until it's time to explain that the watch also shoots a poisonous neurotoxin). But Sam aside, I think the thing is that Garth Nix really just draws characters. Their genders are part significant, but they don't define or limit them in the customary ways. He's more interested, in short, in the contents of his characters head than their pants.

Series starts out with a young girl at a boarding school in a world similar to our own, but with a twist. The world the girl resides in is half technological, half magical. In the first book Sabriel strives to find her father, who has disappeared. The second book is about a young woman [Lirael]trying to find her place in the world, and the third book is about the confronting one's enemies. All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to others, however this book is fairly 'dark'.

Absolutely fantastics series. All of the books are well written, and hold your attention to the very end. Its one of the rare series you don't want to end. The characters are well developed, story, description of charter magic, and the monsters are fantastic.

Interesting fantasty trilogy. Characters are compelling, unlike 'the sweet far thing - blech_- and magic and internal spirit and cunnig are valued. I liked the world created, the magic rules, and the interpersonal relationships.

Very gritty, but good and definitely unique. The second book in the series, "Lirael," is kinda long and drags on a bit a points, but it's still well worth reading.

My junior high librarian, like for so many other books I have read, introduced me to the trilogy. He is such an amazing writer, and I love the mix of fantasy with the 'modern' world. Magic, and machine guns.
I agree with whoever says they should make a movie, as long as they don't screw around with it too much
I have lost count on how many time I have read these books. Love them!

This is seriously I think my favorite trilogy, ever. When I first read Sabriel, I read the book a million times over. My original copy of the book is so beat up and put back together, that is it sick. I actually noticed small changed from the paperback edition to the hardcover edition, that's how many times I read the first book. When the other books came out, I was overjoyed. The world he creates so easily comes to life for me and the characters are still some of my favorite in the world of literature. Really, a must read for fantasy fans.

Definitely one of my new favorites - recommendedto me when I asked for Australian authors at a bookstore in Melbourne, Oz. Nix writes so well that he makes you genuinely care about what happens to his characters. In my mind this book series could rival Lord of the Rings. A great read and I'd recommend it to anyone.

So far I've only read Sabriel and Lireal, however, it's safe to say that they are some of my favourite books of all time. Garth Nix brings the world of magic so close to your heats, teaching you at the same time as the characters are learning new things. They are such fantastic books, and they well and truly have to be read!

Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen are Garth Nix's trilogy of the Old Kingdom, where Necromancers wield bells to keep the dead at bay. Sabriel begins with the main character, Sabriel, who sets out in search of her father who has gone missing. This is by far my favorite of the three and one of my favorite books of all time.Lirael, tells the story of Lirael, a daughter of the Clayr, a group of women who live in a glacier and are able to see glimpses of the future. Lirael is very much an outcast and feels extremely left out a lot of the time. I can completely relate to Lirael's demeanor.Abhorsen, continues the tale that was begun in Lirael. Lirael, along with her nephew Sameth, must stop Nicholas Sayre from joining two spheres together that contain Orannis, the destroyer. If they don't, the entire world will be destroyed. This one is not as strong as the others. The ending is satisfying but I could definitely do with more Old Kingdom stories.
