Not sure what to make of this book... a collection of slightly relevant and mostly irrelevant facts! At least from my perspective.

interesting reading. I LOVE anything Bill Bryson writes. HOWEVER, the footnotes were misplaced and I found them irritating.

Quite probably the best Shakespeare bio I've ever read. You know how most of them are over-blown and oh-so-boring. Bryson doesn't like those either and avoids that trap at all costs, God bless him.

This is a very interesting read, but a lot of the book is about what we DON'T know about Shakespeare...hmmm. Good for debunking myths and non-histories, though.

Bill Bryson is one of my favourite authors, and Shakespeare too in fact, so I thought this would be a great read. And it has it's moments, but it never reaches the heights I expected. Maybe it's that Bryson swears not to make the mistakes others have made so many times with Shakespeare and assume things? Maybe this puts a stopper to the sense of fun and parody that usually runs so deliciously through his books? In all it's still interesting though, though maybe mainly because I'm generally interested in Shakespeare and history. I'm not so sure it would rouse readers that aren't already fans, but then again - that might not be what he wants or tries to do.
