What are readers saying about The Final Solution: A Story of Detection (P.S.)?

My long held belief that American Literary Fiction was hopelessly dead has come to an end with the discovery of Chabon. His narrative style is on par with the classics and his use of humor and suffering to create deeply touching and hilarious moments is of a caliber that is all but void in the canon of American novelists.

The Final Solution is a disturbing, touching story of a world at war through the eyes of a classic literary hero, a African Gray Parrot, and the world that surrounds them both. Delicate, elusive and at times hearbreaking, Chabon paints a surreal world that invites you to sit back and watch with intrigued delight.

This is an engaging mystery that involves a once famous, long retired detective (Arthur Conan Doyle fans may recognize him) in a mystery of a mute boy and his pet parrot who have escaped Nazi Germany. It is pleasing as a mystery and for the older works that it references.

Great ending and nice morality at the end. As usual, Chabon's writing is a treat by itself.

Nice little vacation read. Light reading in spite of the context of WWII and the Holocaust lurking in the background.

A uniquely sad take on the Sherlock Holmes canon. Chabon only hints at the real tragedy and for that reason the story is more poignant. Beautifully written.

Chabon writes Sherlock Holmes.Dense metaphor lacking the urgency of Doyle's style, but then again half the pull is seeing Chabon do Holmes...Wasn't moved, but I enjoyed...

Wonderful little book. Michael Chabon is an amazing author. This story hints at so many things without actually coming out and saying it. And it's not one of those books that you have figured out within 10 pages. It keeps you guessing right until the mystery is solved.

Been quite awhile since I read an actual detective story. This hits all the right notes. It doesn't drag on forever, and it doesn't complicate the story with a bunch of meaningless blather. It's a rather straightforward mystery, easily finished in a day. If you pay attention, you can figure solve the mystery rather early, but even that doesn't spoil the book. There is a chapter near the end told from a rather unique perspective, and that one chapter is worth the price of the book. This was my introduction to Chabon, and I look forward to reading more of his catalog.

A boy with a parrot on his shoulder walks along a train track. He stops to have a wee and an old man, barely able to walk, rushes from his house to warn the boy. He will electrocute himself.

The man is Sherlock Holmes. The boy is a Jewish refugee fleeing Hitler's Germany; he is mute. The parrot talks - it speaks in tongues, it reels off numbers. Holmes is intrigued. Even more so when a man is murdered and the parrot is stolen.

This will be his last case. He will leave his beloved bees and find the parrot.

Chabon is a fantastic writer. He doesn't like the distinction between high class literature and genre fiction. There is only good fiction.

This is good fiction. And it's got nice pictures in it too.

I'm both a Chabon and Holmes fan, so this was a fantastic marriage for me. While I understand that some were disappointed by this novella after the epic Kavalier and Clay, I appreciated it as Chabon participating in the long-standing tradition of Holmesian fiction. And Chabon certainly puts his own personality and interests within the shared canon, much in the way Stephen King did in his own attempt.

My only quibble was that the ending was a bit anti-climactic, but it was still poignant.

Chabon at it again. Excellent story telling combined with an incredible voice. Read it only because it's his best bite sized work. A talking parrot that may know secret German inigma codes? C'Mon, you know you want to read it.

I am in the middle of a project of reading all my unread books "A-Z". I believe i just read 2 books in a row about Sherlock Holmes, completely by accident. One was too long (Arthur & George) and one was too short (Chabon: The Final Solution). Both centered around a family with an Indian priest married to an English woman, and an English detective called on to solve a case. The unsolved cases were different, the modes of story telling were different, but the bottom lines were the same: Neither book was very good. At least the Chabon book was a quick read- more of a novella, really. I haven't decided yet if it is a good idea to read these books back to back or a better idea to skip them both entirely. Probably option B.

This book is an interesting concept and I enjoyed it but I wasn't blown away. Maybe I didn't read it closely enough, but I had this nagging feeling that something was missing.

Fun, enjoyable, not enough characterization tho -- I guess I was hoping for another mystery-type like the faaabulous Yiddish Policemens Union, but it's too short and doesn't get into the characters enough for me. Still fun though

How to rate a Chabon book after reading Kavalier and Clay? Almost impossible. That book was superb, nonpareil. But I did enjoy this book. You know almost from the first few words that the protagonist is an elderly Sherlock Holmes, although Chabon never names him. I wonder what reading it would be like for someone who's never read the Holmes stories. If you have, though, you may get a kick out of this. I did. I only wish that the mystery was as inscrutable as Mr. Holmes.
