A good overview of moral psychology. Poorly edited. The basic argument for a specific moral faculty is not proven. Hauser's evidence points to the development of multiple morality related psychological functions rather than a general moral processor.

I've tried to read this book three times now. The choice of topic is outstanding, but the writing quality is so poor that I just can't get through it. Maybe someone will send it to a good editor and publish a second edition one day.

A thorough catalog of our naturally evolved moral faculty and the social implications of the most recent discoveries. Who says one can not be good without God?

An interesting look at the evolution of "morality" Morality in this context refers to a collection of pro-social behaviors (altruism, reciprocity, judgment), certain pieces of which are shared with many non-human mammals. Hauser analogizes morality to the work of Noam Chomsky on language, i.e. where Chomsky proposed that humans possess an innate faculty for grammar, Hauser proposes that humans possess an innate faculty for morality. I am oversimplifying of course. A good read.

Excellent read. It is a thoughtful look at our natural universal Darwinian morality and expands and quantifies the Kantian moral imperative that a rational being should never be used as merely an unconsenting means to an end. The most poignant aspect is the challenge to the idea that we as a species cannot be moral without god.

I am always interested to read on Pyschology book. And I think this book fit into my kind of reading material. But sometime it can be too detail which mean considerable thinking is necessary. Anyway , I am at page 301 out of 426 now. And hope to finish this book real soon.

No, I'm not done. No, I'll probably never finish it. Yes, it is good, very very good. If you have more time than the mother of an 8-month old, read it!

Sadly, this very enjoyable read will forever be tainted by the finding that Hauser is guilty of scientific misconduct:

Still reading this, but very interesting book. It basically takes the Chomskian notion of underlying parameters and looks at how this works in relation to our morality. The most interesting part has looked at how we switch from Utilitarian notions to other considerations in some seemingly similair situations (I will write a better explanation when I finish the book). It is also intersting how we are so incapable of explaining of moral descisions.

I thought this book had a lot of fascinating material in it. The concept that, as social animals, our moral judgment function evolved over time seems obvious nowadays. The idea that we have a universal moral grammar seems like it will be a promising new field of research.

However, the book was a little difficult to read. This is probably a combination of my lack of academic knowledge re: moral philosophy and a slight dissatisfaction with Hauser's dry writing style (as opposed to someone like Steven Pinker, whose storytelling writing style seems to keep my attention better).

I wonder if Hauser gets any nasty mail from southerners due to his assessment of southern culture/society?
