Couldn't finish this one either as the father was such an arrogant jerk. Some people should never venture out of their own environment.

What a strong story, a book I didn't want to put down about a missionary taking his family to the Congo - written from the perspective of the wife and four daughters. I am just about to read it again.

Initially I had difficulty getting into this novel. The point of view is constantly shifting but once you become accustomed to that it ends up being a necessary part of the book. By far one of the most powerful books I have read. But, be forewarned, at times it almost verges on too much. I've had to take breaks periodically as it becomes overwhelming. Still...among the best I've read.

So sad! I love her way with words describing the children. It makes you think of what harm a parent can do to their child.

Beautifuly written account of a missionary's family in Africa. Very vivid characters, each with their own perspective, their own loss. And a poignant description of a country struggly with the past of colonialism. Definatly a must in the bookshelf.
