Not a bad novel, quite gripping and Gothic, but one of the main characters (I did not know when I began) is a child molester. So, if that bothers you (yes, it is central to the plot) you probably shouldn't read this book. Otherwise it's an interesting and mysterious novel.

Moderately entertaining, but flawed. Would never have been published if she hadn't become famous.

This book was terrible. It makes my skin crawl to think that I actually finished it. Every chapter was written in a different voice, but there was no indication of who was talking. Ugh. I'm over it.
This book was terrible.

One of Joanne Harris's first novels. This story depicts the life of a young sheltered girl prized for her beauty and so is married and caged by it. Through meeting a series of interesting and dangerous people she is eventually set free.

I bought this as a last minute read in Manchester airport & I'm really glad I did. I'm not a huge Joanne Harris fan, I've read a couple of her later novels and although they were good this one really had me gripped. Even lying next to the pool in Spain it sent a chill through me and I look forward to reading it again on a cold winters night and doing it real justice!

If I hadn't started listening to it as a talking book on a plane, I probably wouldn't have picked it up... I missed the end as the plane landed, and had Dymocks order it in for me. I'm glad I did!Sleep, Pale Sister is quite gothic, but I found it intriguing. This was Joanne Harris' first book - years before she was made popular through Chocolat. Apparently it's only just come back into print. I'd recommend this book if you're into a bit of underhanded gothic thrill!

A darkly gothic tale indeed, engaging and provocative in parts if certainly not without its flaws. Those flaws mainly comprising of two and, when the book gets one of those right it seems to go awry with the other. The constant switching of narrators between the four main characters can create a rather dislocating experience and make it difficult to really connect with any of them. Then, particularly with the unnecessarily drawn out ending, when it does linger on any one voice for long enough it just gets a bit too heavy-handed. Stylish, but certainly not subtle. Still a very decent read though and, of course, an early work so I can but wonder how it might have come out were it written later by a more experienced hand.

I really thought that this novel over complicated itself by having such a convuoluted narrative. Also it tried too hard to identify itself within the Gothic genre with annoying repititions of the words Opuim and Laudenum as if this how compensated for the author's lack of descriptive ability. A real disappointment after the delight of Chocolat.

Не е лоша. По-различна е от обичайните сюжети на Харис. На моменти е доста страшничка, аз глледах да я чета само по светло. :)

I have read most of Joanne Harris' books and wanted to like this one... but didn't. While atmospheric, I didn't care about any of the characters enough, not even poor, abused litte Effie.

Not the charming masterpiece that Choclat is, but this book is much more raw. Its power is more primal and readers will find that Harris wasn't as polished a writer in this book as she becomes later. However, the book is a great read and if you are able to find it in America (very difficult for me)then you should look over it. It is very compelling.

This was so different than Chocolat. Except the maid is always serving Effie hot chocolate with her meals. hehe. This is a very dreamlike dark gothic novel. I love the constant switch between characters. Sometimes I would get through half a page and realize it was from the point of view of someone other than who I thought. Confusing, but I think she did that on purpose maybe! I read this while very depressed and sleeping a lot. It felt nice to read something dark while I was feeling dark. But supreme writing by Joanne Harris, regardless of the topic. I love her.

Not just a ghostly story... a peer into the silent lives of this era's women and the men that they survive. And do not survive.

Incredibly well written and subtle in the utmost creepy way. Brilliant.
