The book offers some close up of a damaged child's life but it's lacking character consistency. I think the book could do with more subtleness in portraing ambivalence and contradictions. Good read if you like the genre.

Terrible book! Perhaps it gave me some insight into another world, but really it was not good. I barley skimmed that last bit as I rarely not finish a book, but I didn't want to. I just didn't get what the hubub was about.

This book had me wondering, does this really happen? I really don't know. It is a tragic story of of an unwanted child, who is frequently failed by systems and society. Her mother is dead, her father a young junkie, and she fends for herself most of the time. She has no one to guide her, no one to look out for her, and no one who cares. Perhaps most devestating is the craving she has for physical contact. An uncomfortable hug from a near stranger is a craving satiated. The portrayals of her need for physical contact were gut wrenching. What I didn't like about the book was the constant narration from the perspective of a 12 year old. It becomes irritating and frustrating at times. I also found the ending to be unrealistically Cindarella-esque. I don't know whether this story is at all an accurate portrayal of how people end up like this, but I know getting out of this lifestyle isn't as simple as it was portrayed to be. Definitley worth a read.
