No matter what your teacher/professor says, DON'T START READING MARQUEZ WITH THIS ONE. Is it a masterpiece, yes. Is is beautiful, haunting, epic, etc., etc., yes. Do most students get turned off because it is also dense, purposefully ambiguous, etc., etc., yes. Try some of the short stories first. Get to know and love Marquez, then tackle this one.
