I've read a lot of Bill Bryson's books, and I was surprised how mean spirited this one was. However, I thoroughly enjoyed most of his observations and reflections as he travels through the majority of the contiguous US.

Well, a good read. This book is twenty years old so keep that in mind when he whines about the cost of hotels, attractions, etc. A typical Bryson travel log, a bit more whiny than his others, and he recycles a lot of his jokes through out the book. Don't seek this book out, but if you see it at a used book store pick yourself up a copy and read it at the beach.

Thanks to a book talk by Anna (at GSLIS), I laughed my way through this hilarious travelogue by Bill Bryson. Seriously LOLing all the way through. Doesn't every small town exert some kind of gravitational pull that either keeps people there or makes them keep on coming back? I know my hometown is like that. Bryson checks out small towns from coast to coast, starting in the center: Des Moines.

At first I loved the humor in this book, but after about a quarter of it, it got annoying. I continued to read the entire book, but I was truly making myself, only reading 20 pages at a time. I like Bill Bryson, but this book just went on and on. I realize our continent is "lost" but this book just made me feel down in the dumps. No thanks. I still want to read Bill Bryson books, but I would not recommend this one!

This is my first book by Bryson. I found it very funny at times, but was disappointed that it was oft times repetitive and dismissive. I've been told he has written better books since, so I'll give him another shot.

Maybe I just haven't experienced the United States the way he did. However, I've driven coast to coast round trip twice, one-way once, to California round trip three times, one of those by motorcycle. In addition, I probably did as many family road trips as a kid as he did, including Washington D.C. to Washington state when my parents settled near Seattle in 1966. I find something interesting almost everywhere I wind up in the U.S.A., but he seems quick to pass judgement if a town or park does not meet his specific and personal needs.

I also was surprised by some pretty insensitive, unfunny comments a couple of times.

Overall it was worth reading but once was enough.

witty & absurd with insightful observations about small town america; sprinkled with random facts i love to hoard
I found myself laughing outloud; it's witty & absurd with insightful observations of small town america. Sprinkled with random facts along the way,

i.e. Wyoming, Montana, & Dakotas take up as much space (385,000 sq mi) as France, Italy & Germany combined, but have only a population of 2.5 million, less than a quarter of Paris' population.

Searching for the ideal small town in 1990s America. A personal travelogue of a road trip made with observation and commentary on the built landscape. Sort of a Blue Highways with a mildly sarcastic and anti-sprawl bent.

A much better book than his "A Walk in the Woods."

With a newfound interest in all things USA, i enjoyed this. Otherwise, I would've found this boring. even now, with most of america being vast empty space and towns repeating like a scooby doo scene, it often slides towards the dull. too much assumed-knowledge for a limey like me but on the whole, good light reading with funny bits and a dash of the interesting.

I love his sarcastic sense of humour. Especially when describing his visit to the worst restaurant he've been to. That was hilarious.
