I just re-read this one, since I didn't remember the details at first. I loved all her books as I read them. Rereading this now, I think she's been getting better over the years. Can't wait for the new one coming out!

This was the first book, in a long time, at the time I read it, that made me cry. It's still my favorite of her books.

A really good read, that resonates deeply with me. I can add Codi Noline to my list of favorite book characters. This is a bittersweet story that revisits the late 1980's for me--when idealistic people went to do good in Central America and for their trouble some lost their lives....I was not one of them, of course. But I love the basic principle laid out in the story---to live your OWN life, and live it fully; don't get caught up in making yourself lesser or "smaller" just because you think you didn't do anything great. And also don't beat yourself up because of mistakes that were made. They made you who you were, too.

Not quite up to par after reading Poisonwood Bible and Prodigal Summer, but still a good book.

Barbara Kingsolver couldn't write a bad book if she tried. She delves into the hearts and souls of her characters and makes them come alive.

Cosimo Noline has always felt like an outsider. Raised in a small town in Arizona by her widowed father, she and her sister were always told they were different/better than the other children. Cosimo (Cody) internalized that and never could form a loving relationship even when she left Grace. Her sister, Hallie, on the other hand felt so strongly that she cried about stories in the news that happened to people she didn't know. The two sisters were inseperable until Hallie decides to go to Nicaragua to help the peasants grow crops and Cody decides to go back home to assist her father who has Alzheimer's. Cody finds that going home raises memories that she had long buried but finally she discovers information about her family background that makes her less of an outsider than she had thought. Hallie's letters from Nicaragua help her but also make her lonely. Cody finds a home and a family by the end of the novel, just not the one she started out with.

Highly recommended.

Not as gripping as the Poisonwood Bible - more predictable. Still as insightful into what makes people tick or not tick and with a view of American culture which sits perfectly with the personal.

Beautiful...but I loved 'Prodigal Summer' by Barbara Kingsolver even more. It's a must read as well!
