I really loved the first half of this book. It was suspenful and compelling, but somewhere in the middle it lost momentum. Maybe if it had had 100 pages shaved off it would have helped. It's still an awesome read however, imaginative and twisted as only Clive Barker should be.

The first Clive Barker book i have read and I was impressed. Under Reality's mask there lurks a darker sinister world with such surreal characters and settings. Looking forward to the reat of the trilogy.

Barker still had me at this book, which begins to wrap some of his creations into a single storyline. Still good solid fun.

Another Barker Masterpiece. If you like Weaveworld, Abarat and Imajica as much as I do, you won't be disappointed. The whole "Trinity" thing was a little shallow, though, as it kind of assumed that the reader wouldn't know what Trinity was, and the story lost that dimension for those of us who do, but, it was still a good read.

Another amazing book by Barker. To try and explain it would do it considerable injustice. You're big boys and girls, look it up yourself, all I can do is tell you to read it because it's good. There is also a sequel called Everville; read it, too.

Though I wouldn't recommend it to too many people due to sexuality, continuous strong language, and violent/disturbing images, I will say that Clive Barker is definitely one of, if not THE greatest writer of our time. Once you get into one of his books, he becomes the master of your imagination, and there is nothing you can do to loosen his grip. So far this is my favorite Barker book, and it is absolutly killer-- a joy to read.

While I did think this book was good and worth reading, I didn't enjoy it as much as I did Imajica. TG&SS starts off like gangbusters, but after section II: The League of Virgins, the book was up and down for me. It's one of those books you really have to read slowly to take in all the ideas and imagery to get the full effect, but I would still recommend it. For those who don't like to read, there is a graphic novel version available as well.

Part 1 of this series just seemed to be lacking something. Or rather too much time and detail was spent on the town. I understand that this part of the story was important but overall didn't seem important enough to have a whole book devoted to it.

Barker has a fantastic imagination, but as with King (whose horror fiction I love better), Barker often veers into unintentional camp when he's trying to be frightening. Certain touches-- like his description of the Iad Uroboros as a veiled, unimaginable evil (as opposed to a described one) work, but many of the mythological elements just made me roll my eyes. The work of a good horror/fantasy writer, especially, is to suspend disbelief. This one just wasn't very convincing.

With his wonderful imagination, Clive Barker was just hitting his stride here. Part of the book was the basis for my first abandoned website "The Reef" (an idea way ahead of it's time apparently) this novel crosses the span between the mundane and the fantastical without a noticeable transition. Great stuff.

Wow. This book is keeping me up really late. I haven't read Barker before and don't know how I have managed to miss him, given how much I love dark fantasy. The way this book mixes the real world with the fantasy is brilliant and reminds me a lot of Neil Gaiman (another fantastic dark fantasy author).

As with many stories, this one is about good and evil, More specifcally, what good and evil feel they must do to reach their own ends, and the outward ripple of events that their decision causes upon the world, It's a story about love, another predominant theme, and, like with good and evil, one that is utilized into a "Romeo and Juliet"-esqe situation between those on the side of good and those on the side of evil. It an old story, but in Barker's penmanship and style, one that you've never read before.

It starts of well and ends interestingly but at nearly 700 pages its rather tedious. The dialogue and writing is average but there are some interesting ideas and the league of virgins section is excellent. It just drags man. Sorry Clive, you're clearly very talented.

My favorite of all of Clive Barker's writings, although not (necessarily) where I'd point a beginning reader of the canon. It seems to me a natural unease progresses-- nothing's forced, nothing's made out to be more than it is or needs be; but when we put down the book, it's not quite done with us-- that's the thing that makes this a favorite of mine, not only among Barker's writings but in the larger horror genre.
