If you truly want to understand how moral relativism has been the bane of Western Civilization read this book. The author takes no prisoners and gores many an idolatrical ox.

What a wonderful informative book. If you want a helicopter view of history and the cause and effects of politics, this book's for you. Well written, interesting and with insight into times and people in history. From the first this book grips you, and teaches and illuminates questions I've always wondered about. I havent finished it yet, but what a way to get an education! Very well written.

Simplesmente o melhor livro da história do século XX que li; na verdade o livro começa em 1919, com a confirmação da Teoria da Relatividade de Einstein e suas implicações inusitadas nos meios intelectuais (para desgosto de Einstein, as pessoas associaram a relatividade com relativismo moral) até o lançamento de Sociobiology, do Edward O. Wilson ,em 1975, e suas controvérsias no início da década de 80. Comparado com o super badalado Era dos Extremos, do Eric Hobsbawn, fica evidente porque Jonhson é infinitamente melhor.

Johnson give you the 20th Century as you never learned it in college - accurate, unbiased, iconoclastic and urbane, the very many bad world leaders and the few good who have been left without the credit they deserve.

Have re-read it once already and if I can find one of my copies will try to read it again this winter. While I doubt Sir Johnson's politics and mine align very much, he certainly spins one terrific yarn after another. Is this what Barbara Tuckwell is like?

Jolly good book. There are chapters which bored me a bit - the ones in which he focused on economics, that is. But it's overall a very well-written, comprehensive and very balanced look at Modern times. I love his premise.... if you want to get a good idea of what the book is like, just read the first and last chapters. Both his premise and the main problems and tendencies of modern culture are very well summed up there.

Oh my God, I guess it;'s true, you can't believe everything you read. This is yet another in a lengthening list of revisionist "histories" designed primarily to appeal those who see the world as a black and white affair (america white, rest of the world black). Paul Johnson's Modern Times is to the truth as Fox News is to fair and balanced. Not. I have scarcely read a more breathtakingly biased, result-driven piece of claptrap in my life. If you like your doubleplusgood reading straight from the mouth of Big Brother (aka, Sean Hannityy, Glen Beck, Bill O'ReillyRush Limbaugh, take your pick) , if you enjoy engaging in a five-minutes-of-hate of everyone from FDR to JFK, then you will LOVE Modern Times. If, on the other hand, you are interested in a truly balanced assessment of the twentieth century that is more than a cartoon cut out of ayn rand slathered with the heavy syrup of old testament judgmentalness, look elsewhere.
