This book took me awhile to get through, not because it was hard to read but because it brought up so many things for me to think about. I think my relationship will be better because I read this book. I have a new definition of love.

If you have never read bell hooks before, you simply must. I reccomend this book as a starting point.

The book is good, and it did reassure me that love would one day brush me with its immense, gentle wings. bell hooks sort of soured the book just a tiny bit by sort of forcing her feminism into it, though. Don't get me wrong, feminism is a wonderful thing, and I myself am a feminist; but there seemed to be moments in the book where hooks sort of threw out the idea that men might be less adept at being able to love well, and that simply does not sit well with me. All in all, it's a good book, and a must read for anyone doubting that love will ever find them (because it will); I highly recommend it.

Read on the recommendation of a good friend. Hooks has some excellent points but I didn't ever feel completely immersed in this particular read. No doubt I'll check back in with it over the years.

Hooks is a phenomenal writer and a wonderful speaker. She has such a wide range of views on everything from education to feminism, to real relationships. Her voice is one that must be heard by the masses. In many ways she reminds me of Maya Angelou. Her body of work is beautiful and transcendent.

This is absolutely one of my top-10 favorite books of all time. bell hooks is a brilliant social commentator, and one with beautiful values at heart. She is not content just to observe society, but to change it through her words--which she does successfully. This book offers, as it says, "new visions" of love and its role in our society. This book is rife with insight and truth, and even though you're not guaranteed to agree with everything, you are guaranteed to rethink your views and walk away changed.

Fabulous book. I see that a number of the people who posted reviews before were troubled or concerned by the male/female divide that hooks describes. I felt as if hooks was saying that men are not socialized to do the things that you have to do to act in a loving way, not that loving is something men can't really do. On pg. 11 of the hardcover edition (near end of ch. 1, if your text is paginated differently), hooks talks about how men aren't from Mars, and women aren't from Venus, it's just that women are really reaching out for answers about love in far greater numbers than men are. Certainly, hooks describes her own difficulty, as a woman, finding and defining love, so I don't think she's trying to say that men can't and women can - I think she wants to say (and does say) that men and women can (and must) both love.

This is probably my favorite (modern) book of all time. I would want this to be one of the three books i got stuck on a deserted island with. It is also part of how my wife and i got together. ;)

This is an awesome read about the reality of "Love" in todays society. Hooks touches on the media, families, music, youth in a way that makes absolute sense of why and how our society is the way it is in terms of our varying perspectives about love, past and present. An excellent read and highly recommended to all.

I read this once and hope to have time to read it again, soon. hooks has given me what I always wanted: a complex vocabulary for love. The first chapter is even called "Give Love Words." I felt more of a sense of control and purpose and joy after reading this book than after any other. I want more male opinions about it, because I know she goes on a little bit of a stint about men being unable to love as well or as deeply as women, or something like that. I'd like to read exactly what she has to say, again, so that I can address this idea. Anyway, it's not a self-help book, but it can definitely help you.

It broke my heart into a thousand little pieces. Then, it kissed me on the forehead and told me it would love me forever. The most life changing book of my world. If you grew up on Cinderella, but found more comfort in feminism...read her trilogy on love.
