My least favorite Pratchett novel probably because I'm not much into music... Still isn't a bad book and some parts are great.

I'm a big fan of the Discworld series, but this is one of my favorites. He's especially good talking about "the music with rocks in it."

Having read the Discworld books in a very haphazard order, I was delighted to discover upon bringing Soul Music home from the library that this is the first book about Susan. Her ultra-logical reasoning in the face of the fantastical scenarios that are Discworld were hilarious. I especially liked the bit about the tooth fairy, upon actually seeing one: "She knew that mentally unstable people told children about the Tooth Fairy, but that was no reason for one to exist"! lol

Perhaps one of the reasons I didn't think as much of this Pratchett book as I have the others is because I just took so doggone long to finish it...there are a plethora of characters to keep up with, and several plot lines that don't really come together until the very end (if at all).

But so far as I could tell, it went something like this: Death runs off to "find himself" (he has a tendency to do this from time to time), and so the job of ushering souls into the afterlife falls to his reluctant granddaughter, Susan. At the same time a young aspiring musician stumbles upon a magical instrument that is bound up with the music that forms the very fabric of the universe. He forms a band and becomes very popular, but their success comes at a cost.

I think it would have been better if I had just read this through in a few sittings. As it was, it seemed very disjointed and difficult to fathom.

Word to the reader: if you're going to read Terry Pratchett, don't be reading three other books at the same time. There's no doubt he's a talented writer, but his humor is almost too clever for its own good.

I need to read this again in a book club in order to determine whether I caught all of the band references...
